News Melbourne is on its way to hosting Australia’s premier airport terminal has been welcomed today by Victoria’s peak tourism body, saying the tourism benefits are substantial.
Dianne Smith, Chief Executive of the Victoria Tourism Industry Council (VTIC) says Melbourne Airport’s preliminary draft plan for its Southern Precinct project outlines steps to continue to position Melbourne as the leader in domestic air travel, and provide increased access to international visitors.
“The Melbourne Airport is the gateway to Melbourne and broader Victoria for our domestic and international visitors and so we welcome the increased choice and opportunities this project will deliver to our visitors to travel to Melbourne and throughout Australia,” says Ms Smith.
“Melbourne Airport already has some competitive advantages over other states in Australia, including its curfew-free status and largely co-located terminals.
“This project will also facilitate the further growth of airlines which are based in Melbourne, and continue to position Melbourne as Australia’s leading airport.
“Further benefits will be delivered to visitors through a competitive airfare market.
“Increased visitor numbers will also have ongoing benefits for Victoria and our broader economy, and will continue to support our renowned events calendar and attractions throughout the state.
“We are delighted that the draft plan is now available for public consideration, and further encourage the Commonwealth Minister for Infrastructure and Transport to approve the proposal so that this beneficial project may commence.”
