Hot topics at VTIC – Feb / March 2013

28 /02/ 2013 Comments are Closed

Our Ideas Forum and regional workshops in Ballarat and Shepparton were particular highlights for the VTIC team in February. Policy activities also included meetings with senior ministers and government figures, work around the tourism effects of the Victorian teachers’ industrial dispute and discussion on Tourism Victoria’s Regional Tourism Strategy (2013-2016).

VTIC Ideas Forum and regional workshops

Thank you to all those who attended our Ideas Forum in Melbourne on February 5 and regional workshops in Ballarat and Shepparton on 6 and 8 February. The sessions were so worthwhile that we’ll be holding similar events in Bendigo and Gippsland in March. For those who attended, stay tuned to VTIC’s communications for an outcomes document in coming weeks.

Victorian teachers’ EBA dispute

VTIC Chief Executive Dianne Smith, along with CEOs from the Australian Camps Association and Bus Association Victoria, met with the Hon. Peter Hall, Minister Responsible for the Teaching Profession, to discuss the current EBA dispute between teachers and the State Government. It was a productive 45-minute session in which the delegation briefed the Minister on the flow-on effects of the dispute, including a sharp downturn in school group visitation to regional attractions and school camps. The minister updated the group on the current situation, saying he was keen for a speedy resolution.

Red Tape Commissioner

We were pleased to meet with the recently appointed Red Tape Commissioner, John Lloyd, this month to progress some of our key advocacy work on regulatory burdens and the cost of doing business. Topics discussed included Place of Public Entertainment permits (POPEs), tour operator licensing and planning reforms. This was a productive discussion and VTIC will be working with the Red Tape Commissioner closely in the future. For more information about the Red Tape Commissioner, please click here.

Regional Tourism Strategy (2013-2016)

Tourism Victoria is inviting feedback on its Regional Tourism Strategy discussion paper. VTIC will be submitting comment, but we also encourage members to make suggestions on such topics as events, marketing and digital excellence as they relate to regional Victoria. For further information and to make a submission, click here. Submissions close on 15 March.

National Tourism Alliance meeting

VTIC Chief Executive Dianne Smith met with both Federal Minister for Tourism Martin Ferguson and Federal Shadow Minister for Tourism Bob Baldwin at a recent NTA meeting in Hobart. VTIC also met with Victorian Minister for Tourism and Major Events Louise Asher and senior Department of Sustainability and Environment staff this month.
