Japan-direct flights pave the way for Victoria’s tourism growth

The Victoria Tourism Industry Council (VTIC) has welcomed Melbourne Airport’s announcement of a direct flight service between Melbourne and Tokyo by Jetstar, commencing April 2014.

“Victoria has many elements that appeal to the Japanese traveller, including beautiful nature-based experiences and cosmopolitan Melbourne,” says VTIC Chief Executive Dianne Smith.

“Jetstar’s announcement of increased flights into Melbourne will allow more Japanese visitors to experience all we have to offer.

“Australia is ranked twelfth as an outbound destination for Japanese travellers. There is room for growth, and developments such as this increased flight capacity will ensure Victoria is well placed to capitalise on increased visitation from Japan.”

Melbourne Airport is the gateway to Victoria for 30 million international and domestic visitors annually. In the year ending June 2013, 40,000 visitors arrived in Victoria from Japan, which is a four per cent increase on the previous period. This increase contrasts the Australia-wide trend that saw a two per cent decline for the same period.

While visitation from Japan is below historic levels, there is optimism for future growth, with Tourism Australia predicting the Japan market could be worth up to $3.3 billion to Australia’s economy by 2020.
