City of Melbourne Lord Mayor Robert Doyle launched the 27th Melbourne International Comedy Festival at the Arts Centre’s Spiegeltent on 21 February. More than half a million comedy lovers are expected to descend on Melbourne and surrounds for the festival’s staggering 5860-plus performances during March.

“We may be in the longest election campaign ever but we have the largest Melbourne Comedy Festival ever, offering distractions, diversions and opinions on everything,” said Melbourne International Comedy Festival Director Susan Provan.

First launched by the late, great Peter Cook in 1987 with just over 50 shows in 33 venues, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival has grown into one of Australia’s most well-known and loved annual events and a launching pad for major local and international comedians.
