The Victoria Tourism Industry Council congratulates Victorian winners recognised in the 2016 QANTAS Australian Tourism Awards, with a majority of regional winners showcasing the world-class tourism offerings around the state.

Ballarat and Bendigo businesses led the charge, with the Goldfields region claiming all Victorian golds at the awards.

Sovereign Hill took out Gold for Major Tourist Attraction for the second consecutive year, while Bendigo Tramways received Gold for Cultural Tourism and Masons of Bendigo, who were awarded a prestigious Gold for Tourism Restaurants and Catering Services were a first time entrant.

Victoria Tourism Industry Council Chief Executive Brad Ostermeyer said the number of first-time entrants who had been recognised in the awards was a testament to Victoria’s booming tourism sector.

“A third of our winners were first time entrants, and the majority were from regional Victoria. This shows Victoria’s reputation for excellence in attractions and experiences continues to be recognised right across the state and we look forward to promoting this vibrant and diverse sector,” he said.

Goldfields businesses picked up 1/3rd of the total Victorian awards – the most of any Victorian region – followed by the Mornington Peninsula.

“The awards recognise the valuable contribution our operators make to the national tourism industry and it’s wonderful to see so many Victorians being acknowledged,” Mr Ostermeyer said.
