Working as a guide running winery tours to the Yarra Valley sparked Chris Porter’s passion for the tourism industry, an interest that led him to his current role as VTIC Project Officer. It has been almost four years since Chris joined the VTIC team and he feels the best part of his role is the variety of the work, helping tourism businesses and meeting fellow industry enthusiasts.
“It is a fun industry to work in,” he says.
A viticulture graduate, Chris worked at a winery after university and, using the knowledge he gained, then worked as a tour guide for the Australian Wine Tour Company for three-and-a-half years before joining VTIC.
As Project Officer, Chris manages two external tourism associations, Business Events Victoria (BEV) and Cultural Tourism Victoria (CTV). BEV is currently delivering a State Government-funded initiative, the Regional Victoria Business Events Program, aimed at encouraging conference organisers to host their events in regional Victoria. It is also producing the Regional Victoria Planners Guide, to be released in late June, that promotes regional destinations and venues. CTV projects include producing the annualVictoria’s Cultural Guide and running an annual conference in regional Victoria (this year in November in the Yarra Valley).
Chris is also involved in a voluntary role with the Young Tourism Network (YTN), which was established six years ago to support young professionals and students in the tourism industry.
