$20 million federal funding will help Avalon take-off as international airport

The Victoria Tourism Industry Council (VTIC) has welcomed the Federal Government’s commitment of $20 million to assist Avalon Airport in building its international terminal.

The funding boost, to be announced in tonight’s Federal Budget, is a significant investment for Victoria, says VTIC Chief Executive Felicia Mariani.

“With this exciting announcement, Avalon Airport is a step closer to realising its full potential as Victoria’s second international airport.

“This Federal Government funding allows Avalon Airport to undertake the infrastructure upgrades required to become a fully operational international airport – well ahead of any plans for a second international airport in Western Sydney.”

VTIC has long advocated for Avalon Airport to become Victoria’s second international airport because of the enormous potential that this opens up for easy access for international visitors to the wonders of Western Victoria.

Over the construction period, this project will create almost 100 jobs in the Geelong region.

Once operational, the new international terminal is also projected to create nearly 200 additional full-time jobs at the airport and over 150 in the Geelong and surrounding region.

“An international terminal at Avalon Airport presents even greater opportunities for decentralisation as these new jobs and new infrastructure create more reasons for considering Geelong and surrounding regions as a great place to live, work and do business.

“Yet again, it’s clear that the visitor economy is an economic powerhouse for our regional communities,” Ms Mariani said.
