The AFL held its first international premiership match in New Zealand on ANZAC Day. With an estimated 22,500 spectators in attendance, the historic St Kilda versus Sydney match was deemed a success. The game took 18 months to organise, with the co-ordination of a host of supporting events, hospitality, the promotional schedule, an ANZAC observance ceremony and travelling media.
It is hoped this match will mark the start of a new tradition of collaboration between the AFL and its New Zealand counterparts.
