Airport Rail Link on track with State Government funding

The Victoria Tourism Industry Council (VTIC) has welcomed the State Government’s announcement that it will fund the Airport Rail Link project.

VTIC Chief Executive Felicia Mariani said the Melbourne Airport Rail Link project is pivotal to providing efficient access for tourists to visit Melbourne and regional Victoria.

“The Government’s commitment of up to $5 billion, matching the Federal Government’s commitment, will make this project a reality and be a big boost to Victoria’s visitor economy,” Ms Mariani said.

“As air passenger numbers grow and road congestion increases, an airport rail link is needed to provide reliable and affordable transit from Tullamarine to the Melbourne CBD, and importantly, to facilitate future opportunities to connect the rail network to regional growth centres in western Victoria.

“This critical infrastructure, coupled with the already reliable and successful Skybus transport from the airport to the CBD and various other suburban destinations, will deliver the contemporary multi-modal mass transport network that is critical to serve a global city like Melbourne.

“The Melbourne Airport is our primary gateway for international and domestic tourists. Making their journey as easy and efficient as possible will improve the visitor experience in Victoria, and make it seamless for tourists to see more of our state.

“VTIC has been a strong advocate for the State Government to invest in transport infrastructure that improves connectivity between tourism destinations, including a commitment to the Airport Rail Link project.

“We commend the State Government for committing to deliver this transformative project,” Ms Mariani said.
