F1 GP extension a great benefit to tourism

The Victoria Events Industry Council (VEIC) congratulates the state government for its decision to extend, by five-years the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix being hosted in Melbourne.

This hallmark event is one of the pillars of Victoria’s powerful events calendar, and reinforces our reputation as a host city par excellence.

It positions Melbourne and Victoria on a global stage, and showcases us to the world, each year. We are delighted to learn that this will be extended.

Major events like the Grand Prix also have flow-on effects to Victoria’s economy, and to the ‘grassroots downstream’, such as accommodation, hospitality, catering, transport and taxi and retail services – these are all labour-intensive sectors. Thousands more people are employed as a result of the Australian F1 Grand Prix.

‘’This glamorous event has such a wonderful reputation. It’s integral to the success of the events industry as well as the economic and tourism benefits it provides,” said Peter Jones, Chair VEIC.

Events such as the Grand Prix that have global prominence are a great way for Melbourne to get noticed – particularly by high yielding visitor audiences considering Australia as a future holiday or business event destination.

“This sort of promotion is incredibly valuable. Someone in India, China or Singapore watching the coverage might just be inspired to visit Melbourne and discover our great city for themselves,” said Dianne Smith, Chief Executive VEIC.

Our local expertise in events management is renowned on the world scale. Victoria’s major events calendar is one of our unique attributes and underpins the outstanding experiences had by increasing numbers of visitors to the state.
