The events of the past weekend saw the Andrews Government re-elected in a landslide victory for Labor, bringing policy continuity and providing vital certainty for the state’s tourism sector.

We are now one of the state’s strongest performing sectors, worth over $27 billion to the economy. Having continuity of government is a real opportunity to build on the great work of the past four years.

Today, the Premier announced his newly formed Cabinet and VTIC welcomed the announcement of the Hon Martin Pakula, as Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events. The Minister’s other portfolios include Jobs, Innovation & Trade and Racing. These portfolios all have important synergies with tourism and major events and we’re looking forward to further demonstrating how the sector strengthens the overall economy and Victoria’s broader community. See our media release here welcoming the new Minister.

This has been an incredible year of growth and transition. All of us at VTIC are looking forward to the year ahead and what we can achieve in building on our performance. In looking at the year ahead, the AGM yesterday welcomed Terry Robinson, CEO of Destination Gippsland as our new Chair of the Destination Policy Committee. I am also pleased to advise that John Forman and Fiona Sweetman were both re-confirmed as Chairs of the Attractions Policy Committee and Tour and Transport Policy Committee respectively. Can I also acknowledge the effort and contribution of Noel Dempsey as the outgoing Chair of the Destination Policy Committee. Noel has made a tremendous contribution over the past year and I am very grateful for his support and guidance.

Last week, we celebrated that performance in recognising excellence in the best of the best that Victoria has on offer at the 2018 Victorian Tourism Awards Gala Ceremony.

With 873 of our industry present on the night, we welcomed 27 new Gold winners to the Awards Alumni ……

And we had a record 6 of those incredible winners that were inducted into the Hall of Fame…..

We’re now off to Launceston on the 1 March 2019 to contest the Qantas Australian Tourism Awards, and VTIC wishes all our winners the very best of luck.

I hope to see you all at our Tourism Industry Christmas Celebration on WED 5 DEC where we will toast the year gone by and all that we have achieved!

-Felicia
