GLOBAL TOURISM CHIEF TO FRONT NATIONAL CONFERENCE IN MELBOURNE

United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) Secretary General Taleb Rifai will impart his extensive global tourism management knowledge at the National Tourism and Events Excellence (TEE) Conference in Melbourne from 16-17 July.

The world’s most senior authority on the tourism industry, Mr Rifai will present a unique perspective on global tourism, as well as sharing his wide-ranging experiences with delegates.

Conference co-convenor and Victoria Tourism Industry Council (VTIC) Chief Executive Dianne Smith says Mr Rifai’s attendance at the event is an opportunity that Australian tourism providers can use to shape the way forward for domestic tourism.

“We are truly honoured to have Mr Rifai present at this important conference as an authority on global tourism,” she says.

“We are excited to learn from his international perspective what we may be able to apply in our domestic setting to continue to position Australia as a leading tourist destination.”

Australia’s premier national tourism industry annual conference, the TEE Conference will again be held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in 2012. It will provide a critical forum for the tourism and events industry, featuring speakers who will discuss overcoming challenges despite tough times.

Ms Smith says the enhanced program for this year’s conference will offer operators, destination managers and policy makers business tools, trends and ideas that will help Australia be more competitive.

“The more the tourism and events industry can enhance leadership and excellence, the better equipped it will be to improve business performance and meet future challenges.

“It is easy to be overwhelmed by the challenges in the current market, but there are also some sectors making good inroads. This year’s event will focus on the outlook for tourism and address issues that will help shape business plans across the country.”

Co-convenor and industry veteran Tony Charters says the industry continues to confront serious challenges with global economic uncertainty, Australians choosing to holiday overseas and labour shortages.

“The conference last year put the industry’s issues on the political agenda and also generated creative ideas that were very energising for the delegates,” he says.

“Tourism and events will continue to feel the intense pressure they have had to weather in recent years, making this conference a critical focal point for the year.”

The 2012 National TEE Conference will offer in-depth coverage of key topics relevant to the tourism and events industry, from marketing trends and social media, to the tourism impact of major events, emerging markets, and the outlook for the industry nationally and globally.

The conference will also feature a range of fantastic networking opportunities to connect with other key players in the sector. The Excellence Dinner on Monday 16 July is not to be missed, featuring a 40 minute entertainment section from Olympic sporting and industry personalities.
