Letter to the Editor – Jetstar decision a big win for tourism

Dear Editor,

The recent State Government announcement that Jetstar will continue operating at Avalon Airport for a further ten years is a win for Victorian tourism, especially in Geelong and regional Victoria.

It is positive to see that the agreement will mean the continuation of Avalon Airport’s passenger operations, saving 200 jobs from being lost, and the expansion of Jetstar’s services. Jetstar will increase flights at Avalon from five to seven daily and introduce flights to two new domestic destinations over the next 18 months.

Avalon’s location is of great advantage for visitors wanting to explore regional tourism destinations such as Geelong, the Great Ocean Road and Bellarine Peninsula. The expansion will see the arrival of approximately 700 more visitors in the region each week, which will be a positive for the local tourism industry.

International travel to Australia is forecast to grow by more than 2 million people annually by 2019, which highlights an expected increase in demand for aviation services.

We are delighted that Jetstar is not only staying at Avalon, but growing its operations there. We commend the State Government for working with Jetstar to reach this outcome that is of great benefit to the Geelong region.
