The National Trust of Australia (Victoria) (NTAV) is an independent, non-profit organisation supported by a large membership base. We are Victoria’s premier heritage and conservation organisation and the major operator of historic properties and sites open to the public across Victoria.

About the role:

We are looking for an experienced and creative curator who is interested in developing their career in a role whose principal focus will be on strategic planning, leadership, coordination and management. We want an individual with the vision and energy to help shape some new directions for the National Trust, to develop strong relationships with external networks; equally, will have the management capability to inspire and motivate a committed and passionate team. As such, they should demonstrate curatorial flair as well as experience in developing complex, multi-faceted programs and be able to schedule and coordinate the delivery of them. Ideally, the candidate will also be able to demonstrate a strong interest in innovation in art and museum programs, and experience of reaching new audiences.

This diverse role will allow you to harness your excellent management skills and be responsible for improving visitor engagement through the planning of the presentation and interpretation of the Trusts heritage sites and collections. The successful candidate will take a hands-on role in the delivery of programs, whilst driving change and innovation in the presentation of heritage tourist sites.

Acting as a leader for your creative team, you will seek and create business development opportunities for our collections and house museums. You will be responsible for the development, implementation and management of cultural engagement initiatives which support programming, interpretation and visitor engagement. Your role will explore new stories of the National Trust as well as research and investigate ways to share these tales with the public. This position promotes awareness and access to our collections, exhibitions, programs and cultural services. You will be responsible for the development and implementation of engagement programs and exhibitions to a high standard, strategically focussed and designed with the needs of audiences in mind.

Sitting within the senior management team, reporting to the CEO, this position plays an integral role in business growth and development. You’ll have a breadth of experience in managing and developing house museums, including experience with collections management and interpretations. You will be highly motivated, energetic and well-experienced people leader. You will have a strong reputation for scholarship, as well as an interest in systems and processes.

 

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Development of a fresh approach to the presentation of our properties and collections through our stories and interpretation
  • Manage exhibition projects and interpretation
  • Acquisitions, deaccessions, curation and maintenance
  • The management of the Trust’s databases and archives
  • Produce engaging visitor experiences, using the Trust’s sites and collections by developing exhibits, programs, trails and displays at properties
  • Oversee collections team who manage object conservation, database, curation, storage and handling, acquisitions, de-accessions etc.
  • Oversee the documentation, archives and loans management
  • Research and create plans for executing exhibits, interpretation and other supporting content
  • Manage all aspects of creative execution, from initial concepts through to final production
  • Project manage presentation solutions through all phases from initial research to content production to supervising designers and fabricators
  • Project manage and develop interpretation strategies to increase visitation and visitor engagement
  • Design assessments of visitor responses and audience interests to interpretive approaches and displays through visitor surveys and manage access issues
  • Develop strategies and deliver training to improve staff and volunteer approaches to interpretation and guiding
  • Manage interpretation and exhibition planning and research, test writing, artefact selection, production of publications, signage, and display fabrication.
  • Write articles, grant applications and sponsorship proposals for projects where required and research other sources of funding
  • Oversight of the collections coordinators and exhibitions producer and their practices
  • Recommend and develop work objectives; policies, projects and special initiatives
  • Create, develop and coordinate artistic and historic exhibitions/permanent galleries and public programming with partner institutions
  • Develop and maintain cultural partnerships

 

You will be an outstanding communicator, able to write well and inspire stakeholders and partners. You will also have solid strategic planning skills, a long-term strategic vision and an eye for detail. You will be an experienced manager of people, processes and budgets, ready to play an active part in a new leadership team within the National Trust.

 

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Experience in managing collections including the use of collection management systems and electronic records
  • Demonstrated experience in developing innovative approaches to museum interpretation and visitor engagement
  • Project management experience in exhibitions and interpretation
  • Experience in collections management
  • Qualifications in public history /museum studies and / or collections management
  • Highly developed project management skills
  • High-level understanding of digital technologies
  • Computer literacy, particularly database management
  • Experience in historical research and appreciation of history and heritage issues
  • Effective written, oral and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to liaise with internal and external stakeholders
  • Well-developed research and organisational skills
  • Tertiary level qualifications in museum, archives, library or information management
  • High-level staff management skills, being able to empower direct reports in their practise and abilities

 

Bonus points if:

  • You have experience working in the not for profit space
  • Your background is in a similar role
  • You have experience with Vernon (collections management software)
