The team at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival enjoyed another successful year, with many top acts sold out and at least 20 others adding extra shows or moving to bigger venues in the final week. The festival, now in its 27th year, ran from 27 March to 21 April at a range of venues throughout Melbourne and showcased more than 400 Australian and international acts.
While 2013 box office numbers are yet to be confirmed, Festival Director Susan Provan is hopeful the number of attendees will exceed last year’s figure of 600,000.
“It’s the largest attendance of any festival in Australia,” Ms Provan says.
“People love the art form and it’s within their grasp. Comedy’s not expensive and it’s not difficult to connect with.”
Preparations are already well underway for next year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival, scheduled for 26 March to 20 April 2014.
