Melbourne’s world #2 ranking as sporting capital no surprise to events industry

The events and tourism industries are today unsurprised that Melbourne has once again secured its seat as one of the top two sporting cities internationally, second only to London which will host the Olympics this year.

The 10 point defeat in the World’s Ultimate Sport Cities Awards, which are based on industry rankings from sporting publication SportBusiness International, doesn’t dull the shine on the award according to Victoria Events Industry Council (VEIC) Chief Executive, Dianne Smith.

“Melbourne continuously hosts sporting events that go unrivalled internationally. No other site in Australia – and as proven again in the Awards, few internationally – can offer access to world-class sporting facilities right in the heart of a vibrant city, mixed with the immediate access to unique tourism attractions, accommodation, restaurant and retail outlets,” says Ms Smith.

“Hosting the first game of the State of Origin series tonight is a prime example of why Melbourne upholds this proud status as an internationally renowned event host city. The city is alive today with rugby supporters, including an estimated 15,000 interstate travellers,” says Ms Smith.

According to a further announcement by Victorian Premier Ted Baillieu on the win, Melbourne topped the rankings for the World’s Best Sport Venues and the World’s Best Major Events Strategy, and was named the Best Sports City in the ‘large’ category for cities with a population of between four and six million people.

“Victoria’s major events deliver a combined economic impact to the State of approximately $1.4 billion annually and attract over 230,000 international visitors every year,” says Ms Smith.

“Our events industry works together to promote Melbourne and Victoria to the world and drives significant economic, social and cultural benefits to the State. The flow-on effects significantly contribute to local business, employment and tourism.”
