Tourism industry welcomes $14 billion investment

Saturday 21, Nov 2020

The Victoria Tourism Industry Council (VTIC) today welcomed major commitments from the Andrews and Morrison Governments on rail projects that will improve airport access and help visitors travel to our regions.

VTIC Chief Executive Felicia Mariani said the Melbourne Airport Rail Link and the fast train to Geelong were pivotal projects to give tourists efficient access to the CBD and regional Victoria.

“The $10 billion airport rail commitment from the Andrews and Morrison Governments realises a 50-year vision. It will provide a much-needed boost to Victoria’s economic recovery and deliver a long-awaited addition to the state’s tourism infrastructure,” Ms Mariani said.

Under the plan, trains will depart the airport every 10 minutes and arrive in the CBD in under 30 minutes. Frequency and journey time are critical to the success of any airport rail link and were key discussion points as route options were considered.

“This critical infrastructure will deliver the contemporary multi-modal mass transport network that is vital to serve a global city like Melbourne,” Ms Mariani said.

“As air passenger numbers grow and road congestion increases, an airport rail link, coupled with the successful Skybus service to the CBD and suburbs, is vital to ensure reliable and affordable transit for tourists.

“Importantly, it will facilitate future opportunities to connect the rail network to regional growth centres in western Victoria.”

The airport rail link, coupled with the $4 billion commitment announced by the Prime Minister and our Premier to commence the first stage of the Geelong Fast Rail project, is a major boost to connectivity across the state for visitors and residents.

The fast train from the CBD to Geelong is designed to slash travel time to 50 minutes, with further upgrades intended to cut that to 40 minutes.

“VTIC has been a strong advocate for investment in transport infrastructure that improves connectivity between tourism destinations, making movement around our beautiful state that much easier,” Ms Mariani said.

“We commend the State and Federal Governments for committing to deliver these transformative projects.”
