VTIC has been a strong advocate for increased funding for an intrastate marketing campaign and we want to see Victoria’s $6.6 billion holiday travel trade deficit reduced by getting more Victorians to holiday at home.
VTIC welcomes the Minister’s recent announcements – ‘New intrastate campaign “Our Patch” set to boost tourism in regional Victoria‘ and ‘Attracting visitors to Regional Victoria through spa and wellbeing programs‘ – regarding intrastate tourism. However, we note that these announcements are not new. Funding for these programs was announced in early 2013 and is not new government spending.
The tourism industry creates jobs and delivers economic growth for communities across the state.
The government needs to commit to new money to create new jobs.
In the coming months VTIC will be advocating for new investment in tourism, particularly in the areas of:
- Intrastate marketing
- Regional events
- Capturing the Asian visitor economy
- Getting our small businesses online, and
- Expanding the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre
I remain committed to keeping you up to date on government leadership in the tourism portfolio and I encourage each of you to remain engaged in these important policy discussions in 2014.
If the State Government is serious about jobs it needs to get serious about tourism. A good place for the government to start would be to examine new spending; not old announcements.
