This month the VTIC team were lucky to be given a bird’s eye view of the expansion currently underway at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. The site inspection clearly demonstrated that MCEC will be well positioned to attract the biggest events when completed in approximately 12 months.
MCEC’s expansion is already helping to secure major international events such as the Lions Clubs International Convention 2024 (LCIC24) which beat six other international cities to host the five-day event.
The VTIC team were impressed to see the breadth and scale of the expansion that will add nearly 20,000 square metres of new exhibition and multipurpose space and incorporate the latest technology and event innovation.
The expansion is progressing at a rapid pace with the unique external gold cladding already visible and contributing to the iconic Melbourne skyline along with the new neighbouring Novotel South Wharf (from the Accor Hotel group) also currently under construction. The hotel will offer 4 star accommodation to our business visitors visiting the precinct.
Almost 3,000 tonnes of structural steel is being used in the redevelopment and will ultimately create 700 jobs over its 18-month construction period and support more than 900 new ongoing jobs across the precinct once complete. It is anticipated the expansion will boost Victoria’s visitor economy by $167 million annually.
