TOURISM INDUSTRY CALLS FOR GOVERNMENT RESPONSE TO INQUIRY

22 /02/ 2012 Comments are Closed

VTIC is urging the State Government to release its response to an inquiry into the operation of the Victorian tourism industry. Following the release of the Victorian Competition and Efficiency Commission’s final report in June 2011, we still await a response from the State Government.

Tourism operators who attended last week’s VTIC Policy Summit, and the industry as a whole, urge the Government to present its findings so that we can begin to plan ahead for the future sustainability of the sector.

The VCEC’s draft report highlighted many of the issues that are discouraging investment in the tourism industry, particularly challenges for regional operators.

Various recommendations in the report align with VTIC’s view that there are unnecessary barriers to investment in the tourism industry. Some of these unnecessary barriers are founded in the out-dated assumption that environmental outcomes, community aspirations, agricultural production and tourism development cannot co-exist in a balanced and sustainable manner.

These barriers must be broken down if Victoria’s tourism industry is to adapt to new markets, remain vibrant, competitive and a major economic contributor to the state.

Tourism businesses have been experiencing tough conditions in recent times, with VTIC’s latest Industry Snapshot in November finding 43 per cent of businesses reporting a decline in profitability.

We hope the Government’s response to the inquiry will ensure a boost for all those businesses doing it tough.

VTIC is keen to see swift implementation of the endorsed recommendations and stands ready to assist the Government with this.
