On Wednesday 16 October, 100 Visitor Information Centre (VIC) volunteers from around Victoria’s High Country and surrounding shires converged on Benalla for the 2019 High Country VIC Volunteers Summit.
The summit was a great way for volunteers to participate in famils and see all that Benalla has to offer. From the renowned Benalla Art Gallery, to the high speed action at the Winton Motor Raceway, street art, North East Victoria silo art and the nationally significant Winton Wetlands.
During the afternoon volunteers heard from a variety of guest speakers, covering a number of topics. The main speaker Despina Karatzias spoke about: ‘Transforming from a Volunteer to becoming a Destination Ambassador’.
Other speakers included Sally Day from Greta Landcare who spoke about the ‘No Flies on Us’ Queensland Fruit Fly campaign and how the VICs in our region can assist in tackling the problem, and Craig Islow from CFA who spoke about fire danger ratings and the VIC role in fire safety.
The 2019 summit was a huge success and provided volunteers the opportunity to listen to speakers who could engage and inspire them, and also understand that they are the frontline of most visitor centres.
