The Victoria Tourism Industry Council (VTIC) welcomes the reinstatement of a federal tourism minister and congratulates the Minister for Tourism and International Education, Senator the Hon Richard Colbeck, on his appointment.

“This reinstatement acknowledges the importance of our industry as Australia’s largest services export sector that employs more than one million people and generates $113 billion annually,” said Acting VTIC Chief Executive Erin Joyce.

“We acknowledge and thank the Minister for Trade and Investment, the Hon Andrew Robb MP, for his great work while tourism was part of his portfolio, and know that he will continue to advocate for the sector as a trade and investment priority.”

Key areas of focus for the new minister must include:
Increasing the supply of short term labour, including through 457 visas, working holidays and international students.
Reforming Australia’s GST Tourist Refund Scheme to streamline the GST claim-back process and subsequently stimulate shopping expenditure.
Strengthening mobile connectivity at regional tourism hotspots to improve the experience of visitors, and increase length of stay and expenditure.

“We look forward to working with Minister Colbeck to advance tourism growth in Victoria and throughout the country,” said Ms Joyce.
