Young Tourism Professionals put forward views in Regional Tourism Review

05 /09/ 2019 Comments are Closed

Twenty young professionals gathered in Melbourne last month to participate in a workshop designed to give the next generation of the tourism workforce a voice in the Regional Tourism Review.

Participants in the workshop came from diverse academic backgrounds and roles in the tourism industry. Some participants joined from government organisations, some from industry councils and others from private tourism businesses.

Matt Sykes and Olivia Salsbery, also young tourism professionals, coordinated and facilitated the workshop and authored the resulting submission, providing a summary of the insights and ideas discussed.

Reflecting the priorities of Victorian young professionals in the regions, the submission’s recommendations focus on:

  • Bettering our tourism offering
  • Making the most of marketing
  • Supporting industry
  • Enhancing tourism boards
  • Better Coordination efforts

The group also gave key recommendations around giving young people a voice. These recommendations include:

  • Curating tuned-in curriculums
  • Increasing introductory job opportunities
  • Promoting tourism as a career path, not a stepping stone
  • Upholding tourism’s multidisciplinary nature
  • Increasing regenerative policies and practices
  • Connecting young professionals with internships
  • Encouraging leadership to begin passing the baton
